“Lieutenant Murnau” is an album by the musical ensemble “Le forbici di Manitù,” in which the songs of the phantom musical group “Lieutenant Murnau,” invented by Vittore Baroni, are remixed and reenacted.
More about LIEUTENANT MURNAU
The group was started in 1980 and “disbanded” in 1984. The image of the group used comes from a photograph taken by filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau while he was serving as a lieutenant in the German army. This photograph was taken and reproduced on posters, flyers, fanzines, badges, and all other pop mythology memorabilia to create interest in something that did not exist.
Lt. Murnau managed to produce the various records and cassettes without Baroni playing a single note, simply releasing mixages of recorded music. The tape “Meet Lt. Murnau,” for example, was a reimagined mix of Beatles and The Residents. Film scores and music by FW Murnau provided by other groups in homage to Murnau were used.
Lt. Murnau also appeared on stage, disguised, mixing different records and crucifying a Beatles LP . Hundreds of life-size masks of Lt. Murnau hardbacks were printed so that people could wear them. Anyone could make music like Lt. Murnau and become Lt. Murnau, but few people did. The whole project was focused on a very limited idea, that of underground music, and did not have the broader implications as in the cases of Monty Cantsin or Luther Blissett.
